Interpersonal Resiliency

Therapy Groups

Why go to a therapy group?

Because sitting one-on-one with a therapist only gets you so far. Sometimes we have to practice what we are learning about  ourselves and how we want to create new relationship patterns in a more secure environment than our life or community provides us.

Therapy Groups on Interpersonal Resiliency

Picture
In general, interpersonal resiliency groups are process-oriented and relationship-focused and allow members to explore their own internal and external experiences of being resilient in connection with other humans. Each group is open to whatever is brought that week by the members to process and connect around. This allows members to slow down the everyday non-verbals we communicate with each day and learn how to feel and read these in ourselves and each other. It also gives members a chance to find the sweet spot between healthy boundaries on how much to share and practicing vulnerability in what we share. There is usually at least one theme that emerges each session and if there is interest by the group in deepening awareness around this topic, the counselor will prepare something for the following group to facilitate a specific learning process  (e.g., Psychoeducation on PTSD, boundaries, letting go).

All members in these groups have had some exposure to a relationship model Ruth developed that explains how we grow conflict and connection in human relationship. While this doesn’t come up explicitly in therapy groups very often, it is understood to be a big part of what the group is practicing and staying aware together. Types of therapy groups are divided below according to phase of life and loosely around age.

 Group 1 - Interpersonal Resiliency

This is a group for those who are still looking for their sense of path and community in the world. Starting January 2020, this group will be re-opening for new members. It has about 8 members and meets on Thursdays from 6-8pm. Reviews of this group have been positive and no members have wanted to leave when it has re-opened. However, due to schedules, only about 5 of the 8 members on average are able to come each week, and so it is opening up to include a couple more.

It will re-open to release members and include new members every few months.

Group 2 - Interpersonal Resiliency for 30-40 Somethings (on pause)
“The Wild unknown” for 30ish-40ish year old adults who are needing intentional community to explore whatever is ahead in their life (and what is in the present first). It is loosely inspired off of this journal.

Group 3 - Interpersonal Resiliency for 40-50+ Somethings (on pause) (and/or for people who already hold leadership positions in life and are looking to be part of a leadership oriented group). This group is for people who are wanting to embrace their inner elders/leadership potential and explore their sense of community and humanness with a group of others who are practicing something similar. This might be weekly or every other week depending on what the group decides and will be on Saturdays from 2-4pm.

How to Join

Fee and Commitment
Weekly cost is $52/group and commitment is for around 3 months at a time. In addition, most people in groups attend therapy with Ruth or another therapist weekly. Sometimes people in the group want to attend one-on-one therapy less frequently than weekly to save on their budget. This is a possibility and would need to be discussed in an individual session with Ruth.

If you are interested in joining but have not tried group therapy before, after your initial session one-on-one with Ruth, you will be invited to attend a couple group sessions and then you can decide if you want to continue coming for the duration of the quarter (when the group will be closed to new members).

Next Steps:
To join one of the above groups, please fill out the form below with your availability to set up an an appointment to meet with Ruth one-on-one. During this session, you be invited to explore interest/goals in attending the group and get to know a bit more about Ruth as a therapist and group leader.
